The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) has included the Las Hoyas site, located in the province of Cuenca, in its list of the Second 100 Geological Heritage Sites. The proponents of the Las Hoyas nomination are part of the Paleontology Unit of the Faculty of Sciences and the Center for Integration in Paleobiology (CIPb), directed by Ángela Delgado Buscalioni, who is also a member of the MIRCo council.
Delgado Buscalioni emphasizes the importance of this recognition:
“Being ranked as one of the most significant geological sites in the world is an expert-endorsed acknowledgment, achieved among more than 400 nominations evaluated by a panel of around thirty specialists. For us, this represents a major boost for a unique project that has always taken on major methodological and technical challenges, and that has brought together a wide network of researchers from various fields.”
