This seventh part of the travel notebook we have another submission by our colleage Clara Molina. This video-notebook grasps her impressions and experiences of her stay in San Cristóbal de las Casas (Chiapas, Mexico), under the European project of activist and researchers exchange ReDes_Ling: Resistir la Desigualdad Lingüística (Staff Exchanges, ref. 1011131469). This way, we can see the ethnographic experiences and exchanges this project encourages reflected.
In this research we understand linguistic inequality and aim to reverse it. We underline different patterns of inequality as:
- The asymmetric relation between linguistic groups that translates into social differences, economic disadvantages, unequal access to rights, lack of material and emotional well-being or inability to develop one’s potential (Bonnin, 2013).
- The linguistic discrimination is as generalized as other discriminatory patterns based on race, ethnicity, sexuality or gender (Baugh, 2003; Lippi-Green, 1997; Urciuoli, 1996).
