The 2026 Sociolinguistics Symposium will be hosted by the University of Fort Hare — marking the first time this prestigious international conference will take place on African soil.
Founded in 1916, the University of Fort Hare is an historically significant institution, renowned for shaping African intellectual and political leadership. During the colonial and apartheid eras, it stood as a beacon of hope and enlightenment for African youth, producing graduates from across the continent — from South Africa to Kenya and Uganda — who went on to excel in politics, medicine, literature, and the arts. Among its distinguished alumni are Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Govan Mbeki, Robert Sobukwe, Chris Hani, Robert Mugabe, Herbert Chitepo, Elius Mathu, and Charles Njonjo, whose contributions to liberation and development shaped modern Africa.
