Workshops on Teaching Spanish to Immigrants and Refugees

August 25–28, 2025 | Course recognized by the Instituto Cervantes

This practical and collaborative course is designed for educators working with immigrants and refugees in private institutions, shelters, schools, and NGOs. It provides tools for language instruction (literacy, content-based language learning, and didactic materials) as well as insights into the social dynamics of the classroom (cultural competence, multilingualism, formal education, mediation, and media representation of immigration).

The course consists of hands-on workshops featuring activities, interaction, and discussions, along with an evaluation session based on micro-teaching simulations. It aims to develop key teaching competencies, including organizing learning situations, fostering intercultural communication, and managing emotions in the educational environment.

OBJECTIVES

  • Address specific challenges in language teaching, such as literacy, adult education, multilingual classrooms for children and adolescents in the school system, and selecting appropriate didactic materials.
  • Design and prepare a Spanish language class for immigrants.
  • Respond to cultural clashes, linguistic stress, and integration challenges.
  • Critically analyze both personal and peer teaching practices.

METHODOLOGY

The course follows a highly practical approach with direct classroom applications. It consists of seven workshops and an evaluation session. Each workshop leader will provide instructional materials and guide participants through the assigned tasks. Sessions will follow different methodologies, including small-group work with didactic materials, case studies, problem-solving activities, and expert presentations.

To prepare for the evaluation session, participants will need to complete at least one hour of independent work outside the classroom on each of the first three days.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE

The course will take place at the Antonio Machado Campus of the International University of Andalusia, in Baeza (Jaén), Spain, from August 25 to 28, 2025:

  • Monday to Wednesday: 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM
