Last February 12th (from 4PM to 6PM) and 13th (10AM to noon), the Discourse and Political Action Group of the MIRCo center hosted a seminar, open to its members and to the community.
This seminar, divided into two sections, dug deep in different research experiences on the most important issues of the political actuality. We were also joined by two international experts, who shared their finding and projects, giving the chance to discover different ways to research.
For the first session we were joined by Ana Aymá, researcher at the National University of Quilmes, Argentina, and member of the Research Unit on Discourse, Gender and Society DiGeS. She is the lead researcher in the project “From the margins to the core: gender and rights in the current far-right discourse” which uses discourse analysis to study how the far right uses gender on its policies and campaigns. In that first session, Ana explained the rise of the far right in Argentina, mainly regarding Javier Milei and his group of public figures. We dug deep in the main discursive elements of his political platform, as well as its effects on the general public.
For the second session, we were joined by Petra Andits, Senior Researcher for the Institute of Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Her current research focuses on the opinions made by Hungarians on Facebook on the War in Ukraine. Her research interest revolve around far right discourses, nationalism and gender. On these matters, Petra shed some light on this phenomenon: how messages on social media were guided by irrationality, seen in elements like the repetition of the message, the obscene tone and the constant hate. Likewise, during the debate different aspects were analyzed, besides discovering the overall characterization of the profiles behind such reactions.
It was surely an enriching experience. Not only did we met different topics, but we also deepened our relationship so we can build, in the future, an up-to-date, innovative research. Do not miss future seminars!
